Surgical Diseases of the Penis (Phimosis, Paraphimosis, Balanitis)

What is phimosis?

It is the inability to retract the foreskin, which we call the prepuce. It is more common in premature babies.

Is every phimosis pathologic?

No, if the baby can urinate by squirting, if urine does not accumulate between the foreskin, there is no problem, there is no need to take any action. This situation is called Physiological, that is, natural Phimosis.

Is it necessary to forcefully push back or open the foreskin?

No, it is unnecessary, as mentioned above, if the baby can urinate by squirting and urine does not accumulate between the foreskin, there is no problem, there is no need to do any procedure. On the contrary, a forced procedure may cause undesirable consequences such as bleeding, infection and fibrosis. However, if the foreskin still cannot be pushed back at the age of 5, it is pathologic and circumcision is required.

What is Balanitis?

It is an inflammation of the foreskin, which we call the prepuce. The tip of the penis is red, edematous, hyperemic and painful. When it recurs, it should be investigated for urinary tract infection. However, sometimes inexperienced people may confuse the white-colored Smegma, which is physiologically found under the foreskin, with inflammation, it is necessary to be careful. Smegma does not need to be treated. It causes the patient to take unnecessary antibiotics.

What is paraphimosis?

It is when the foreskin does not return to its normal state after retraction. It may cause necrosis by disrupting the blood supply of the foreskin. It usually develops due to the families pulling the foreskin backwards to open phimosis.
